Holiday Handmade Cavalcade Tomorrow

Holiday Handmade Cavalcade
Saturday December 5th
One last post before the fair!  These fresh and modern botanicals will be available as originals, prints, and letter size cards.  They were a lot of fun to do, a nice change of pace from my fantasy work.  Next week, a post about the small works I did for IlluXcon.

New Lampwork

More New Work
Here are some new lampwork glass beads I've been working on, all available at the craft fair in Beacon this Saturday and at the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade in New York City on Sunday.
Large etched organic abstract lentil beads to be worn on a choker or turned into pendants
These Victorian Baubles are ready to be turned into pendants or watch fobs
Glass headed flat head pins are a great little stocking stuffer for your needleworker, very handy for sewing or just decorating a pincushion. I made the little sea monster just to show off the pins.  It looks a bit perplexed.  After all, what has it done to deserve all this poking?

Craft Fair Weekend!

Craft Fair Weekend

It's time for the only two craft fairs I'm doing this season!  Come see my lampwork glass based crafts (no arts or prints) at either of these two fairs - Saturday in Beacon, NY, and only on Sunday in Chelsea, NYC.  The links are at the bottom of the page.

This is your chance to see in person some of the new things I've made. Here are my miniature glass seascapes!  I make each sea anemone, shell or sea star on the mandrel and then assemble them together with epoxy and fine sand.  I haven't seen anyone else making these yet on the internet, so come get something really original and one of a kind!  The cherry or walnut wood blocks they are on  is only 1.5" square, to give you an idea how tiny they are.

Craft Fairs

Craft Fairs June 1st & 2nd

I belong to two Etsy teams, Etsy NY and Hudson Valley Etsy Team, and they are each having a craft fair on the first weekend of June.  I will be hoping for no wind or rain and showing my jewelry and my NEW one of a kind stuffed monsters.  No artwork, just crafts from me at these two shows.  The forecast is for a sunny weekend so come on out!

The Craft Fair in Hyannis

The latest incarnation of  the shop
Cape Cod is gorgeous.  I never went there before having to take my son to sailing events.  So when I saw I had to take him to Falmouth in the summer, I signed up with Castleberry Fairs for their show in Hyannis in July.

I decided to not use the big jewelry display board I used at the Holiday Handmade Cavalcade.  It's hard to fill up all that space.  I attached my beadboard panels to a six foot table on risers, covered it with a tablecloth, and it made a nice "counter" with the white folding bookcases from Target.  You can see the weights on the bookcases - they're very flimsy, and the one on the left arrived broken in 5 pieces.   It was a lot of work but the weather was incredibly beautiful and perfect, and the lovely and talented Eileen Lipkind brought me lunch on Sunday.  She's a member of the Creative Glass Guild of Etsy.

I haven't listed the prints yet, but they are made.  I'll try to get that done in September.  Right now I have two book covers to finish, and have my nose to the drawing board!

Falmouth YC
At the same time my son was sailing in the c420 North American Championship at Falmouth Yacht Club.  We stayed at the Tides Motel just across the street from the club so I could leave him and his crew to their own devices while I did the craft fair.  At sixteen and seventeen, they really didn't need or want ol' Mom hanging about too much.  The motel was a wonderful treat.  The windows opened right on the beach and I've never stayed before at a place where I could hear the ocean waves as we went to sleep at night.  The son and crew finished sixteenth out of 144 boats, just out of the silver.  It has to happen to somebody!

Display 2.0

Well, the Holidays were too hectic to blog, and I spent January doing a bookcover. February was spent working on special bead orders and my new display. I put beadboard wainscotting panels around my plastic portable shelves, held in place with plastic ties, used an old piano top cover for the middle table board, and painted everything white. All in keeping with my shabby chic-Coastal Living vibe. I had to use the garage for my photographing - the due dates for fair applications were coming and we have been in a continuous round of rain and snowstorms - Could not put up a tent in 14" of snow. Aack!

I love my wacky baroque candelabras, which I repurposed with the help of some wood dowels and and aluminum wire into displays for my big Oceana Heart Pendants. They're actually pretty fragile for something so heavy.

The cleaned up, photo shopped, "Display" for Show applications. Wish me luck!

Needless to say, I still have more plans for improvement....

Our First Street Fair

It was very nearly a disaster. Grandma, Jessamyn, and I set out at the crack of dawn for the Fabulous Fifth Avenue Street Fair on a blustery May morning. I was going to show my artwork and my beads, and Jessamyn was going to show her button hairbands. It was our first time selling from a tent on the street and we were not prepared for high winds and possible rain. The tent tried to blow away, the panels fell over, and the display followed suit, beads flying, carousels breaking. At one point Grandma and Child were in tears and asking to go home. In my best “Calm Mommy” tones I said nobody was hurt and we would keep trying. The artwork never went up and stayed happily under an extra tarp I had brought. We developed our seller’s lines; “These buttons are made by Jessamyn…These are glass beads I make by hand…” and we sold a lot of product! We met two other Jessamyns, a young mother from Britain and a pretty college student. We also spent HOURS untangling the cupcake necklaces, "cutting" through the last Gordian knots only minutes before it was time to take down the tent. Whew! I'm not a coffee drinker but I downed a McCafe Mocha for the drive home.
